The Remember the Maine cocktail is a classic drink that pays homage to the USS Maine, a United States battleship that sank in Havana Harbor in 1898. This cocktail was created during the Prohibition era and gained popularity for its complex and robust flavors.

2 ounces rye whiskey

3/4 ounce sweet vermouth

3/4 ounce cherry liqueur (such as Cherry Heering)

1/4 ounce absinthe

Cherry or lemon twist, for garnish (optional)

Fill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker with ice.

Add the rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, cherry liqueur, and absinthe to the glass.

Stir the mixture gently with a cocktail spoon for about 30 seconds to chill the drink without diluting it excessively.

Strain the cocktail into a chilled cocktail glass or coupe.

If desired, garnish with a cherry or a twist of lemon peel. You can place a cherry on a cocktail pick and rest it on the rim of the glass or twist a strip of lemon peel over the glass to release its oils and drop it into the drink.
